Matt Lunson at Cyprus Avenue
October 19th, 2005 Posted in Ireland, Live Music, Music, PhotographyMatt Lunson played Cyprus Avenue last Friday night. This time he played with a full band so there was more of a punch to the songs. Although, he has such a powerful voice that he could sing without any accompaniment to great effect also.
The first single (I think) from his debut album Miss Vaughan was Softly Spoken Boy and the full band version of this was in stark contrast to his solo version the last time I saw him in the Cruiscin. Maybe it would be better if he could combine the two and have the full band effect contrasting with a softer slower approach on the verse. This is one of my favourite songs from the album but it’s chocabloc with great songs. If you don’t have it yet, get your skates on and buy it now.
A quick mention of the support act: Cormac from The Maladies played 4 or 5 songs. See here for a picture of him playing the guitar. He played the first 3 songs with the piano and I was going to take a pic of him playing that on the next song but he got up and started playing guitar. If this is anything to go by, I’m going to check out The Maladies next time they’re around. Great voice and great musician. He had a familiar sound but I couldn’t quite place it. By the way, you can download their Fifes and Forts single from their site.
