Cork Big Jazz Band

Or is it the Big Cork Jazz Band? Or even the Big Band of Cork Jazz? They were a little unsure themselves of their name but on their first night of what looks to be a regular slot of jazz in the home of one of the world’s prominent jazz festivals, this group of fine musicians didn’t disappoint.

As I mentioned last week, this gig was in Cyprus Avenue, which is just above the Old Oak. Not a bad venue, but I was wondering how the 20-piece jazz band would fit on stage. In the end, I counted at most 16 musicians but hey, who’s counting? :) It was quite a squeeze at that anyway.

They played a variety of jazz tunes finishing up with “It don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that swing”. Much of the music was much mellower than this with vocals from one of the female musicians on a few numbers. And what a voice!

The music was superb, the singing was amazing, and even the venue seemed to suit the atmosphere (which surprised me). In short, go see these guys. Hopefully they’ll keep coming back.

Update: Looking at my previous post, it’s obviously the Cork Jazz Big Band going by their flyer.  I prefer my name though…
