The Roaring Forties Go To The Far Side
May 7th, 2006 Posted in Ireland, Live Music, Music, PhotographyThe Roaring Forties played in Cork's newest music venue, The Far Side, on Friday night. It was a fairly low-key affair, not helped by the fact that The Far Side bar still doesn't have a name above the door. I wasn’t 100% sure where the place was so click here for a Google Map, it’s right bang in the centre. Still, it was my first time in there since it changed from being Cork's first Polish bar. Whatever happened to that I wonder?
The gig itself was different from the usual Roaring Forties because there is not as much room to maneuver in there. The band adapted to this by playing some slower music along with their usual high-tempo swing classics. When they played Johnny B. Goode, Jerome Rimson got up on stage and sang a verse. When I took the picture below I didn’t realise he used to play bass with Thin Lizzy among an impressive list of other artists which can be found here.
I'm looking forward to seeing this bar develop as another gig venue in Cork. Now that the Lobby has been sold, we need a venue that has a bit more character than Cyprus Avenue. I would love to see some jazz trios in this place.
The Roaring Forties are playing a few gigs in Cork and further afield over the next month before heading off to the US for a quick tour. Check their website for more info.
Some other pictures from the night.

Emm, well I said it at lunchtime and only decided late on to go. You’re a big boy now, PCB, I’m sure you could have made your own way there. Have a good day in work
