Tone Control at the Savoy

Last week Tone Control and Exit:Pursued by a Bear played in the Savoy Theatre in Cork as mentioned yesterday. Doors were at 10pm and thanks to Michael Carr of the Green Room on 96fm for tickets. Much appreciated.

Now down to the gig. Like I said, doors were at 10pm and I had heard both bands on Campus Radio that morning saying that they were giving CDs away on the night to the first 50 people in. Never one to turn down a freebie, we turned up early. No CD on the door and I was having a little rant when the hairy fella in the picture above (of Tone Control) came around and handed us their single "He Said, She Said". 3 great tracks, I must say. Check out their site where you can listen to the tracks online. Cheers for the single by the way. I wasn't really getting upset at the lack of a CD and don't believe any malicious comments on this post that may suggest otherwise :) .

Pursued by a Bear

First up were Exit: Pursued by a Bear (lead singer pictured above). Now, I should mention that it was Wednesday night and I really like, and need, my sleep on such work nights. Thus when the lads finally got onstage I was eager for them to get on with things. I hadn't heard their music before but I had seen their name on CorkGigs.com quite a few times. They had quite a decent set. I didn't manage to blag one of their CDs but as with Tone Control, check out the Exit:Pursued by a Bear site to hear their stuff. They had quite an interesting finale to their set when the lead singer got into a foetal position in front of the stage and remained there for at least a minute.

Pursued by a Bear

Tone Control came onstage after a considerable break in between the 2 sets at which stage our patience and general natural good-humour was beginning to feel the strain. Now I don't want to come across as a moaning old fecker, maybe I am, but we only stayed for 2 songs of Tone Control. It sounded great, what I did hear, but I had to console myself with listening to their single on the drive home.

All in all a good night of music but please get the bands on early! Cartoon and The Roaring Forties played last night in the City Hall but I need my sleep this week so couldn't make it unfortunately.

Hey Donal, some good photos there. We turned up for that gig just after 10.30, and it was pretty deserted for the first hour. Exit: Pursued By A Bear started after 11.30, so next time I’m going to the Savoy for a similar gig (“knock-knock club” as they call it) I won’t be going early to subsidise the cover charge by paying for overpriced drinks in plastic glasses!

To be honest, it’s like that in most venues, but it’s nice to go along early and give some support to the support when possible. Last night I went to see Duke Special in Cyprus Avenue. It was advertised as doors 8pm. I drove in for around 10.30, just caught the end of the support band The Amazing Pilots before the main act, and was out of there for midnight. Fantastic gig too.

By the way, at the Savoy the other night I just asked the girl taking money downstairs if the CDs were free; she said yeah and gave me one from each band.
