The Jive Aces in Soho
September 27th, 2006 Posted in Ireland, Jazz, Live Music, Music, PhotographyThe Jive Aces were playing in Soho in Cork last Saturday night. Thanks to Julian for the heads up on this. When we got there, things were in full swing (pun intended) with three of the band up on the bar counter. This was not what I expected from the swanky Soho bar, the place to be seen by the cool people of Cork. Obviously, Pure Cork Boy is just not cool enough to frequent such an establishment.
In spite of my preconceptions of the venue, the Jive Aces put on a great show which seemed to go down well. Apparently, they had been up on the corner where the double bassist and piano player were but they weren’t feeling the love so they quick-stepped it down to the bar itself.
With a month left to the Cork Jazz Festival, it’s great to see some jazz other than this one weekend where Cork people traditionally stay away from the city! Seeing as my birthday always falls around the jazz festival, I have always seen some bit of jazz. This year, there are a plethora of great gigs happening but I’ve already spotted one clash. The Roaring Forties are playing on the 20th October, the same night that the monthly Doubletime is taking place in the Spailpin. Unfortunately, they’re both on at the same time too. It would be handy (hint hint Julian if you’re reading this) if the Roaring Forties gig was a midnight gig and Doubletime started an hour earlier (hint hint nudge nudge Gary) so we could get to both. Otherwise, we’re left between a rock and a hard place!
A couple more pictures of the colourful Jive Aces, complete with cheesey grins

Oh, you’re in fine form this morning, shouldn’t you be off doing a bit of work??? As for cool, your definition of cool and mine must differ somewhat! Anyway, I’ll take it in the spirit you meant it, ya shit stirring bastard!

I dig it!

I reckon you’re safe, given how rarely we start on time, though on the 20th Doubletime would be the one to go to – lots of other chances to see the Roaring Forties over the Jazz weekend. Thanks for the pics!

Don’t worry, a cunning plan is being formulated…

Well, Baldrick, what is your cunning plan?

As we discussed!

Bloody hell those guys really know how to wear bright suits. I hope they play in Cork again soon after all the hype about them.

Only other date in Cork this year is Saturday 7th October in Kinsale, which is a bit of a pain! I’d love to see them play the Savoy or Half Moon.

Well the 20th looks like it could be quite a night now that it’s possible to get to both Doubletime and The Roaring Forties.
How abot a combo of The Roaring Forties and The Jive Aces? Now that would be interesting!

Pure Cork,
If you can make it to Kinsale we’ll get you in to make up for your harrowing experience – if you can’t get in with the trainers send us an email and we’ll lend you some shoes!

Sounds like a plan to me… one pair of size twelve dancing shoes please!

Beware the wolves in zoot suit clothing. These people are active evangelising cult members. See xenu dot net.

To prince xenu, yes they are scientologists, no they do not evangelise. If you look you will see just how many charitable events they have played with proceeds going to the charity. They have a strong anti-drug message, which in their business is no bad thing, they are thoroughly good ’stand up’ guys with strong moral and family values. I’ve seen and met these guys and their wives enough times to know. No I’m not a scientologist, they will talk to people about it if they show an interest – endex!
