Director at Cyprus Avenue
October 13th, 2006 Posted in Ireland, Live Music, Music, Photography
Director played a sold out show in Cyprus Avenue in Cork on Wednesday night to launch their album “We Thrive on Big Cities”. This band are getting quite a bit of exposure on national radio with catchy tunes such as Man I Imagine and Reconnect easily recognisable from the amount of airplay received.

The uber-nerd look of lead-singer Michael Moloney reminded me of a slightly less dishevelled Jarvis Cocker. Although crowd interaction during the gig was kept to a minimum, he certainly didn’t lack confidence in playing to a full house.

On their website, Grandaddy, Muse, and The Strokes are mentioned as modern influences on the music of Director with the latter being most evident as soon as you hear their sound. Also from the images section of their site, these lads have played in Oxegen so I was glad to get into this gig in Cyprus Avenue. Next time will probably be the Savoy who are not so camera-friendly!

I bumped into another photographer at the event, Sarah Theissen, who has great pics from this and other gigs and are well worth a look.
My Alamo played support, more on this tomorrow.

As ever, top class photos (you should have applied to the Irish NME who were recently looking for photographers here – might still be, you should check that out if you’re interested). What did you make of Director? I saw them supporting The Spinto Band earlier this year and thought they were alright. Worth the hype, do you reckon?

Thanks for the comments.
Sinead, I thought they were decent enough even though there might have been something lacking, there just didn’t seem to be great energy on stage. Apart from the drummer who really got into it at times, the rest of them might have been just back at rehearsals at times. Having said that, the music was class, I’m looking forward to getting their album. I’ve been listening to the few tracks you can play on their site quite a bit. As for the Irish NME job, that would be a dream but I think I’m a bit off that standard just yet!
