Tobar an Cheoil at the Triskel

On Thursday night last Tobar an Cheoil came to the Triskel in Cork in the guise of three fantastic traditional musicians: Brian McNamara on uilleann pipes, Gráinne Hambly on harp and concertina and Éamon Ó Donnchadha on flute and vocals. As well as the delectable playing from all three, they interspersed the music with good humoured chat and detailed information on the history of the tunes they play. I also play the uilleann pipes but I know very little about the history of the music I play so I thoroughly enjoyed this aspect of the night.

I haven’t been to the Triskel for quite some time now and I had forgotten what a wonderful room they have for music. I’ll be back there next Friday when Aaron Dillon launches his debut album. On Thursday night however, the bass beat from The Long Island across the lane from The Triskel could be heard at times, especially when solos were being performed. I hope this doesn’t interrupt the gig next week.

Thanks for the photos and the writing. Always nice to see trad music in its native land!

I had no idea what to expect at the gig but was very pleasantly surprised; it was very enjoyable. Glad to see the photos turned out well. Since they mentioned on the night that it was being recorded for a future airing on Lyric FM, remind me if you hear when this is scheduled!

bhí an ceol go hiontach but a slow air, cannot recall name, really brought the house down.

Yes, that slow air was certainly the show stopper. It might be on one of his albums.
