David Geraghty at Cyprus Avenue (2FM 2moro 2our)

David Geraghty

David Geraghty, of Bell X1 fame, headlined the recent 2FM 2Moro 2our (or in English, the 2FM tomorrow tour, far too many letters in that…). I was really looking forward to seeing him at this having heard his excellent CD “Kill Your Darlings”. Check out his MySpace for some tunes. Betty The Sheep has a review of the night gig over on her blog; I was at the all ages afternoon show as I was too late in applying for tickets. David Geraghty put on a great show I thought, and like Betty, found the mixture of artists at the gig a little odd. He was definitely the highlight of the gig for me, fantastic musician and his songs are really growing on me.

Boban Markovic Orkestar at Cork School of Music

Boban Markovic Orkestar

The Boban Markovic Orkestar played at the Cork School of Music on Saturday night. And what a show! I didn’t know what to expect as I had won the tickets on the mailing list of a new live music blog in Cork. Thanks Nicki!

Right from the start, the music was explosive and I just loved the tempo changes throughout each piece of music. The crowd seemed to consist of quite a lot of non-Irish people, who were very familiar with the music, some of whom could not contain themselves and started dancing almost from the beginning of the night. By the end of the show, the front of the Curtis Auditorium in the School of Music was full of ecstatic dancing, a lot of which appeared to be traditional eastern European.

The Triskel Art website have a blurb about how the Boban Markovich Orkestar used to compete at an annual festival in the Serbian town of Guca, interestingly described as a mixture of the Willie Clancy Festival in Miltown Malbay and the Puck Fair, but because of their dominance they do not compete anymore.

Philtre at Cyprus Avenue

Philtre

Tralee band Philtre were the final act at the Melting Pot gig last month following on from Star Turtle and The Refuseniks.  I have seen them play twice before, in the Brog and previously in Cyprus Avenue, so I knew what to expect.  They have a new drummer this time around but this didn’t take anything away from their sound.  Check out their MySpace for some great tracks.
